“Almost as Glam as an #InstaMama?”: Stitchfox Co-Founder Bobby Measures Up

Confession: we love #InstaMamas. They’re so… glamorous. Yesterday, our ‘behind the scenes’ takeover with Mama blogger Mandy Duncan got us thinking: what if one of the Stitchfox crew documented a fairly ordinary day in their very normal life?

Specifically, we wondered whether a lowly hustler and full-time paramedic (a.k.a. Stitchfox co-founder Bobby Fox) could hope to measure up to the ultra-glam looks & lifestyle of a mama blogger...

Did we just give the game away?

BOBBY'S 6AM: EARLY MORNING WAKE-UP 🌞

#Instakid in the making?

At 6am on the dot, 3yo Malachi hits Mum & Dad’s bed like a whirling dervish. Blearily, Bobby smears the sleep from his eyes and bundles the little guy off into the kitchen — hard-working Mum needs a well-deserved #TGIF sleep-in.

Wiping away the fatigue of yesterday's 13hr shift of flat-out paramedic life-saving, Chef Bobby crafts a breakfast worthy of the finest Insta fame... A bed of crunchy Sultana Bran, drizzled with rice milk (not cow milk, says Malachi). With an adept flick of his wrist, Bobby tops the meal with a curl of homemade yoghurt, a smattering of frozen organic blueberries, and a gleaming kiwifruit. 

Chow time. 

BOBBY'S 9AM: THE STARTUP GRIND BEGINS ☕

Malachi helps, kinda.

Toil, toil, toil. Bobby cracks his knuckles and gets ready to smash out some early-morning Stitchfox admin. He looks at numbers. He looks at graphs. He uses a calculator to do some small-biz accounting. Halfway through the accounting, Bobby raises his hands to the sky in confusion and despair. 

Needing back-up and emotional support, Bobby calls Greg — his Stitchfox Co-Founder and partner-in-crime. Over the phone, Greg encourages Bobby to fight through the pain.

Bobby agrees to battle on, consoling himself with another 'pick me up' coffee. 

BOBBY'S 12PM: SNEAKY ZIP TO THE BEACH 🌊

Turns out Bobby’s 'flexible startup lifestyle' has one massive bonus: sneaky beach surf missions in the middle of the day. Mother nature being what it is, Bobby keeps an eye on the tide/wind/swell from his front porch.... Because ya never know when the conditions are gonna come together. Amiright? 

When #Surferbrah Bobby spies a nice break, he rips off his everyday Dad clothes to reveal his ever-ready hero wetsuit. Just like an ordinary Clark Kent transforming into Superman, Bobby zips up his suit and flexes his pecs... *peow peow* 

BOBBY'S 3PM: QUALITY DAD TIME 🚀

Ah, shit. 

Back at home again, and it’s ‘Constructive Learning Time’ for Papa Bobby + young Malachi. With an air of reverence, Bobby hauls out out a precious box he keeps hidden away. Its contents? Lego blocks — time-honoured relics from Bobby's own childhood (maybe). Time to get building.  

Piece by piece, Bobby helps Malachi sculpt an extremely #grammable rainbow tower. It's tall. It's sturdy. It stretches to the sky. It symbolises… something. Bobby wonders to himself: is this a teachable moment?

Edit: Nope. 

BOBBY'S 5PM: NATURE APPRECIATION HOUR ❄

How do kids do this? Don't their feet get cold? 

Bobby and Malachi fool around down on the beach at Muriwai. Bobby's eyes gleam. He never gets tired of those glorious West Coast sunsets. Gazing thoughtfully at the horizon, Bobby ponders his existence.

Ah, life. 

Suddenly, Bobby snaps back to reality, his Ninja-Dad instincts tingling. 

Where's Mal?

Damn.

Bobby scrambles to find the runaway, and reunite him with his tiny shoes + socks. 

Always prepared. That's Bobby's parenthood motto. 

BOBBY'S 7PM: BACK TO WORK AGAIN 😓

Heeeelping.

Aaaaaand it's back to the grindstone for Bobby. Repeat Step #2.

And repeat again.

And again.

BOBBY'S 8PM: SWEET CHILL-OUT TIME ✨🌙

Not sleeping, I swear.

Sweet baby Jeebus, the day is done! Why's this the best part of Bobby's day? Because Bobby + Malachi's #1 girl Phillipa is home, obvs. 💕 

Once everyone's fed and curled up their in PJs, it's time to chill out as a family. Phillipa reads a bedtime story (or 5) to Malachi. and Bobby pretends he's not listening. But he is. 

As Phillipa's gentle voice washes over him, Bobby's thoughts drift over the day's events. Bobby wonders whether he's measured up to #InstaMama standards today. 

Who cares, he thinks. We're all just busy peeps/parents doing our best, after all.
