Can You Help Us? We're Looking for a Worthy Cause.
“Do what you can, with what you’ve got, where you are.” Call it cliché, but we really do believe that generosity makes the world go round. That's *exactly* why giving has been part of our Stitchfox business model since day one.
As we head into winter, we'd like to put a call out to our Stitchfox Mamas for advice about something really close to our hearts: our next giving project.
Recently, it's been on our hearts to do a bit more to help Kiwi kiddos. We know we can’t clothe every kid in New Zealand with our resources here at Stitchfox, but we've got a wide range of really awesome (and brand new!) kids’ clothes to donate, and we're looking for a charity or community to help us do that. Know of any?
SO, THE BUSINESS WORLD IS CRAZY
When we started Stitchfox back in Greg’s mum’s basement, we knew we wanted to rip up a dusty old kids’ retail model and rebuild it. We wanted to create a solution for busy Mamas who found it mind-numbingly painful to shop for their little ones, and we wanted to build a business model that didn’t fixate on the “bottom line.”
Don’t get us wrong, it’s important to keep the bottom line in mind. To be effective, you have to be healthy — which is exactly why airlines tell you to grab your own oxygen mask before you reach out to help someone else with theirs. But as a business, a “profit-driven” attitude stops you looking out for others.
... That's why WE'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THE "RIGHT WAY" TO GIVE.
As Stitchfox entrepreneurs and real-life parents, we feel pretty lucky that we’ve been able to build something awesome on the strength of our own values. “Giving back” has always been one of those core values, and as some of you may remember, we initially thought our “Upcycle Box” miiiiiight be the right way to give.
With the Upcycle Box, Stitchfox peeps could send outgrown outfits back to be recycled for other families, which we thought was pretty cool. But the idea wasn't perfect. Getting to the Post Office caused some headaches for our busy Mamas, and we realised that people actually love being able to pass clothes on to their nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbours.
So we went back to the drawing board.
A CALL-OUT TO OUR STITCHFOX MAMAS
The thing is, we haven't found the right fit yet. We've got a lot to give, but we need some help to make that happen. So if you know of a community in Kaitaia that could use a hand... or a neighbourhood in Auckland, a non-profit in Gore, or even a wee school on the East Cape, PLEASE LET US KNOW.
Have some ideas already? We can't wait to hear them. We'll be able to solve this giving conundrum once we put our heads together!
